Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform ( Mr Howlin) :

I refer to my reply to Parliamentary Question Nos. 39603/12, 39605/12, and 39606/12 of 19 September 2012.

The closest data currently available within the Department to that sought by the Deputy is the estimated breakdown of employee numbers on a whole time equivalent basis (based on a whole time equivalent figure of 292,000 in the first quarter of 2012) by salary range within the public service. The estimated number of public servants in the annual salary range of €80,000 to €100,000 is some 9296 representing 3.18% of the total whole time equivalent figure of 292,000.

The salary range of €80,000 to €100,000 excludes the impact on the gross salary of the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act 2009 which imposes a progressive pension related deduction of 7.9% to 8.5% on salaries of public servants in this salary range effective from March 2009.

Am I correct in thinking that if you multiply the above you end up with in the region of 9 million euro being spent on Public Servants earning this kind of money? That is obviously NOT taking into consideration the amount of retired public servants who would be taking home something similar every year, for doing NOTHING, i.e. no work, put out to grass early with a thanks for your public service massive pension, in keeping with the massive salary they were used to?!
