Magdalen Laundries
- Updated: 19th February 2013
Today’s apology by the Taoiseach on behalf of the Irish
people to the survivors of the Magdalen Laundries is hopefully the beginning of
the end of the trauma and suffering that the thousands of women who were
incarcerated in the laundries have suffered through over many years.
I would like to pay tribute to the women who campaigned for
years to get this far. Their solidarity and concern for each other should be a
lesson for us all.
Our society has been exposed as an uncaring heartless place
that locked women away for the only reason that they were women and vulnerable.
We all have the responsibility to make sure that their suffering is never
repeated again. Unless we are vigilant and build a society that recognises the
human rights of all citizens we are in danger that similar injustices could
happen in the future.
