Marine Committee Positive Move but Extra Initiative Needed
- Updated: 18th February 2015
The Oireachtas Marine Committee met yesterday to discuss the report on Rural Coastal and Island Communities. Representatives from the Irish Island Marine Resource Organisation appeared before the Committee to discuss the progress of the report.
Speaking at the meeting, Jerry Early of Aranmore Island, asked that the Committee establish a “working group” to ensure that the recommendations of the report “Promoting Sustainable Rural Coastal and Island Communities” are carried out.
The response was positive and the Committee agreed to ty and move this forward.
However, Independent TD for Donegal and Committee member Thomas Pringle made the point that “the newly established National Inshore fisheries forum might not meet the needs of island communities and an extra initiative is needed.”
