Independent TD for Donegal Thomas Pringle has today called on the Minister for Social Protection to publish the Departmental report into barriers facing seasonal workers accessing social welfare payments in Donegal ahead of the Report being discussed by the Committee.

“In the Minister’s recent reply to me the Government has indicated it will not publish the report until it goes to the relevant Oireachtas Committee, in this case the Committee on Social Protection.

“While I accept the Committee on Social Protection will provide the basis for an important discussion on aspects of the Report into seasonal workers, I believe the Report should be published now so that seasonal workers in Donegal can adequately represent their needs when the Report is discussed by the Committee.

“I will be writing to the Committee in anticipation of the Report being sent there in the near future asking that they consider the publication of the Report so that seasonal workers can become active and engaged stakeholders throughout the process. For now, we are clueless as to what the Government report might be saying about the situation of seasonal workers in Donegal so it’s important that everyone has a chance to represent themselves equally.

“Furthermore, it has taken too much time to get to this stage. In her reply Minister Doherty was still unable to indicate a timeline as to when the Report will progress to the Committee despite myself bringing up the issue for a number of years now including meeting directly with the Minister for State at the time. In all this time, seasonal workers continue to face unnecessary and discriminatory barriers to social protection payments and credits throughout Donegal and elsewhere” concludes Pringle.
