Independent T.D for Donegal Thomas Pringle has today called on the management of the RAP factory in Gweedore (Rapid Action Packaging) to recognise the workers’ right to trade union representation.

Deputy Pringle has given his full support to the workers who have this week voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action in a ballot taken by the SIPTU trade union. The vote was held due to the continued rejection by management of the company to recognise the workers’ union.

Speaking on the result Deputy Pringle said “in 2018 the issue of union recognition shouldn’t be an issue yet again we are witnessing another struggle underway for basic recognition of Union representation which should be a fully recognised right at this stage. Yet unfortunately we are far from it in the context of Ireland.

“Workers have a right to representation and collective bargaining and it’s time the company recognised this. The workers need a voice to air their grievances and ensure that they are working in a safe environment. This is a very diligent workforce who have played a very important role in this highly profitable company so at the very least they deserve their union membership to be fully recognised by their employers.

“Furthermore, the company has received grant aid support from Údarás na Gaeltachta, essentially state money. I believe it should be a condition as part of the grant aid system that funding cannot be released until employers recognise union membership. I look forward to addressing this issue with the Minister when the Dáil returns from summer recess” concludes Pringle.
